Questions
How Much Does an Ounce of Weed Cost in NY?
In New York, an ounce of legal weed typically costs between $200 and $350 at dispensaries, depending on quality and taxes. Street prices often run lower, around $150–$250, but you sacrifice lab testing and consistency. For verified, lab-tested flower, expect to pay within the dispensary range.

Dispensary vs. Street: Ounce Price Comparison
When deciding between a licensed dispensary and an unlicensed source, the cost difference is real—but so is the gap in safety and consistency. Here’s how they stack up.
| Factor | Dispensary (e.g., Planet Nugg) | Street/Unlicensed |
|---|---|---|
| Price per ounce | $200–$350 | $150–$250 |
| Lab testing | Every product is NY State-approved and lab-tested | No testing; risk of mold, pesticides, or unknown potency |
| Potency consistency | Labeled THC/CBD levels; consistent from batch to batch | Varies widely; you never know exactly what you’re getting |
| Legal protection | Fully legal, licensed by the NY State Office of Cannabis Management | Illegal; potential legal trouble |
| Selection | 1,700+ products, including flower, pre-rolls, vapes, edibles, and more | Limited to whatever is available |
| Customer support | Knowledgeable staff, easy returns, and loyalty rewards | No support, no guarantees |
The extra $50–$100 per ounce at a dispensary buys you peace of mind, lab results, and a consistent experience. For many, that’s worth it. If you’re curious about how different forms compare in potency, see what form of weed hits the hardest for a breakdown.
Why Ounce Prices Vary Across New York
Several factors push ounce prices up or down, and understanding them helps you spot a fair deal.
| Driver | Effect on Price |
|---|---|
| Strain genetics | Rare or exotic strains cost more; classic strains are often cheaper. |
| THC content | High-THC flower (25%+) typically costs more per ounce. |
| Cultivation method | Indoor and organic grows are pricier than outdoor or greenhouse. |
| Local market | Areas with more dispensaries, like Farmingdale, may have competitive pricing. |
| Taxes | NY state and local taxes add a fixed percentage to every sale. |
Quality and taxes are the biggest levers. A budget ounce might be $200, while a top-shelf, small-batch strain could hit $350 or more. Always check the menu for current pricing—it changes with supply and promotions.
